ABC New Fall Series Preview – Nashville
ABC had a few misses with its most recent batch of fall series (PanAm, The River). I remember being excited about both of those shows last year this time, alas they failed to live up to their promise. As I continue to look at the next batch of fall series, Nashville looks like one of those shows that I really like the idea of, but I’m worried about its staying power.
That said, this preview trailer is fantastic.

Chart-topping Rayna James (Connie Britton) is a country legend who’s had a career any singer would envy, though lately her popularity is starting to wane. Fans still line up to get her autograph, but she’s not packing the arenas like she used to. Rayna’s record label thinks a concert tour, opening for up-and-comer Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), the young and sexy future of country music, is just what Rayna needs. But scheming Juliette can’t wait to steal Rayna’s spotlight. Sharing a stage with that disrespectful, untalented, little vixen is the last thing Rayna wants to do, which sets up a power struggle for popularity. Could the undiscovered songwriting talent of Scarlett O’Connor (Clare Bowen) be the key to helping Rayna resurrect her career?
Complicating matters, Rayna’s wealthy but estranged father, Lamar Hampton (Powers Boothe), is a powerful force in business, Tennessee politics, and the lives of his two grown daughters. His drive for power results in a scheme to back Rayna’s handsome husband, Teddy, in a run for Mayor of Nashville, against Rayna’s wishes.
“Nashville” stars Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights,” “American Horror Story”) as Rayna, Hayden Panettiere (“Heroes”) as Juliette, Powers Boothe (“MacGruber,” “24”) as Lamar, Charles Esten (“Enlightened,” “Big Love”) as Deacon, Eric Close (“Chaos,” “Without a Trace”) as Teddy, Clare Bowen as Scarlett, Jonathan Jackson (“General Hospital”) as Avery, Sam Palladio as Gunnar and Robert Wisdom as Coleman.
“Nashville” was written by Callie Khouri (“Thelma & Louise”) who is an executive producer along with R.J. Cutler (“The September Issue,” “The War Room,” “Flip That House,” “A Perfect Candidate”) and Steve Buchanan. The pilot for “Nashville” was directed by R.J. Cutler. The series is produced by Lionsgate, ABC Studios and Gaylord Entertainment.
Nashville is currently scheduled to cap ABC’s very successful Wednesday night comedy block. That means it will get a great lead in. Will you be watching?

1983 New Fantasyland TV Special
While the Magic Kingdom’s is getting an expanded Fantasyland, it’s not the first version of Fantasyland to get an upgrade. In 1983 Disneyland’s Fantasyland went from Medieval Festival to the more Medieval City setting we have now.
To help make the public aware of the changes Disneyland produced a TV special that starred the late Heather O’Rourke (Poltergeist) and also the late comedian Morey Amsterdam.
Thankfully YouTube user PokeyVision has preserved the 1 hour special. The story is a bit lite, but it works as a big commercial for the new Fantasyland giving audiences a sneak peak into the new attractions.
I vaguely remember seeing this on TV (how could you forget Morey Amsterdam’s outfit). If you want to see more of the show, it’s below the jump. It gets pretty weird down in Part 4:

Composing the Music of Carthay Circle Restaurant at Disney California Adventure
In this video, Disney treats us to a behind the scenes glimpse into the recording studio with Bill Cantos. Cantos is the music arranger of all the tunes that you’ll hear in the new Carthay Circle Restaurant in Disney California Adventure. His task was to arrange classic Disney music and give it a timeless sound that blends into the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Music is such an important part of the dining experience, I love that Disney is going out of their way to make sure they have the best musicians doing such beautiful arrangements of these songs. What do you think?

Walt Disney World Marathon to Celebrate 20th Event with New Course
As soon as WDW Marathon weekend 2012 came to a close, runDisney has been hinting that the Walt Disney World Marathon in 2013 will have some big surprises in store for those ready to “go the distance” and tackle the 26.2 mile race on its 20th anniversary. Today, runners all over the world are excited to have some of those big surprises revealed, thanks to a special video run-through of a new course created for this special event.
Some new highlights of the new course include running on the race track of the Walt Disney World Speedway, as well as through Champion Stadium at the Wide World of Sports Complex. Champion Stadium, while known to most as the center of spring training for the Atlanta Braves, will also be the center of the “Mile 20 Spectacular” for the 20th anniversary race. Although the mile 20 celebration isn’t described in great detail, some special on-course entertainment is alluded to in the video.
WDW marathon vets will also be happy to see that this new course has runners arriving at the Magic Kingdom much earlier than previous years, while still maintaining the tradition of running through all four theme parks in the Walt Disney World Resort. In previous years, runners reached the Magic Kingdom around Mile 10, while this coming year, runners will be following an initial route similar to the Half-Marathon course, putting them at the Magic Kingdom around Mile 5.
For comparison, here are links to PDFs of the new 2013 Map and last year’s 2012 Map.
For those interested in running the special 20th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon on Sunday, January 13th, 2013, registration is $150 ($135 for Disney Visa Cardholders) now through 6/19/2012. Registration jumps to $170 between 6/20/2012 & 9/25/2012, and goes up again to $190 as of 9/26/2012 until the race sells out. If 26.2 miles isn’t long enough for you to get your run on, you can also register for Goofy’s Race & a Half Challenge, which will have you running both the Half-Marathon on Saturday, January 12th as well as the 20th Anniversary Marathon race on Sunday, January 13th for a whopping 39.3 miles of runDisney fun. Registration fees for Goofy’s Race & a Half Challenge are $320 ($290 for Disney Visa Cardholders) now through 6/29/2012, when they go up to $350 from 6/20/2012-9/25/2012, and top off at $380 as of 9/26/2012, if the race doesn’t sell out before that. (Runners beware: Goofy’s Race & a Half Challenge always sells out quickly- it is already 61% full, 7 months out from Marathon Weekend 2013!)

Will you be going Goofy, or is 26.2 enough for you? Personally, I think I’ll be sticking with the Half-Marathons for the moment, but a girl can dream about going Goofy one day…

US Men’s National Soccer Team to Train at ESPN WWOS Complex
They may be out of the Summer Olympics, but the U.S. Men’s National soccer team is still competing. And the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has scored another soccer related coup with the team training there at through May 24 in preparation for an exhibition match against Scotland in Jacksonville on May 26.
The team’s roster includes Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Tim Howard and Carlos Bocanegra, among others. The team is practicing at the complex each day but the only training session open to the public is Sunday afternoon May 20 starting at 5 p.m.
The US team’s appearance at the complex further underscores the complex’s stature as one of the leading venues for youth and world-class soccer in the nation. The complex is the official winter training home of the AS Roma club and hosts Disney’s Soccer Showcase, which features the top high school soccer talent in America. Also, marquee European soccer stars such as Kaka and Leo Messi have also trained at the complex.

Meet the Monorails of Disneyland Resort
You know that feeling you get when you see something for the first time and it makes so much sense that you can’t believe it hadn’t been thought of before? Yeah, that just happened at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim.
With the debut of Cars Land in Disney California Adventure less than a month away (June 15) the monorails at the resort have been given a Cars makeover. The three new faces are Mandy (Blue), Mona (Orange), and Manny (Red) Monorail. Mandy and Mono Monorail are already running and Manny will be joining them shortly.
It’s not just the outside of the monorails that have been given a facelift, but the announcements heard along the ride will now be handled by each of the characters. Yes, I just called the monorail a character. Welcome to DCA 2.0, people.
The only thing I’m curious about is the wording of said announcements: “Please keep your hands and arms inside… me,” puts a whole new spin on safety.
What do you think of Mandy, Mona, and Manny Monorail at Disneyland Resort?

ABC Previews New Fall Series: 666 Park Avenue
This week, ABC rolled out its new fall season of primetime shows to excite fans and pry open the pocket books of advertisers. Rather than run down the litany of shows, I want to highlight a few of the ones I think will be big hits. 666 Park Avenue stars LOST’s Terry O’Quinn and is being positioned by ABC as an attempt to capture the same audience as LOST.
video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player
At the ominous address of 666 Park Avenue, anything you desire can be yours. Everyone has needs, desires and ambition. For the residents of The Drake, these will all be met, courtesy of the building’s mysterious owner, Gavin Doran (Terry O’Quinn). But every Faustian contract comes with a price. When Jane Van Veen (Rachael Taylor) and Henry Martin (Dave Annable), an idealistic young couple from the Midwest, are offered the opportunity to manage the historic building, they not only fall prey to the machinations of Doran and his mysterious wife, Olivia (Vanessa Williams), but unwittingly begin to experience the shadowy, supernatural forces within the building that imprison and endanger the lives of the residents inside. Sexy, seductive and inviting, The Drake maintains a dark hold over all of its residents, tempting them through their ambitions and desires, in this chilling new drama that’s home to an epic struggle of good versus evil.
“666 Park Avenue” stars Rachael Taylor (“Charlie’s Angels,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” Transformers) as Jane Van Veen, Dave Annable (“Brothers & Sisters,” “Reunion”) as Henry Martin, Robert Buckley (“One Tree Hill,” “Lipstick Jungle”) as Brian Leonard, Mercedes Masöhn (“The Finder,” “Chuck,” “Three Rivers”) as Louise Leonard, Helena Mattsson (“Iron Man 2,” “Nikita,” “Desperate Housewives”) as Alexis Blume, Samantha Logan as Nona Clark, with Vanessa Williams (“Desperate Housewives,” “Ugly Betty,” “Shaft,” “Soul Food”) as Olivia Doran and Terry O’Quinn (“Lost,” “Millennium,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Alias,” “The West Wing,” “Jag”) as Gavin Doran.
Based on the book series by Gabriella Pierce, “666 Park Avenue” was written by David Wilcox (“Fringe,” “Life on Mars”), who is also an executive producer along with Matthew Miller (“Chuck,” “Human Target”), Leslie Morgenstein (“Gossip Girl,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “The Lying Game,” “The Secret Circle,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”), Gina Girolamo (“The Secret Circle,” “The Lying Game”) and Alex Graves (“Fringe,” “The West Wing”). The pilot for “666 Park Avenue” was directed by Alex Graves. “666 Park Avenue” is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment (“Gossip Girl,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “Pretty Little Liars”) and Warner Bros. Television.

Build a Droid Factory at Star Wars Weekends
One of the new merchandise features coming to Star Wars Weekends in 2012 is the Droid Factory where you can build your very own Droid figure. The Droid Factory is open now and will run at least through the Star Wars Weekends festival. Similar to the build your own lightsaber section, there are 71 different pieces to create the 3 ¾-inch figures including a variety of novelty features so your droid has its own personality.
You also get a nice package to take your droid home in. I’ll be checking it out in person this weekend and will report back with what droids we made.

EPCOT Photo Update: Summer’s Coming
With summer right around the corner, EPCOT has a couple major projects going on right now and a lot of little details being added or upgraded. First a couple things that aren’t pictured:
- EPCOT’s Flower and Garden Festival wraps up this weekend with a special tribute concert by Mickey Dolenz for his friend Davy Jones. There’s not going to be a dry eye in the house.
- A new entrance for Turtle Talk with Crush is still under construction at the Seas with Nemo pavilion.
- There are some new menu items in Mexico’s La Hacienda.
- Habit Heroes inside Innoventions is still closed.
As with the Magic Kingdom update, I’ve hosted the photos I took over on Google+. I hope you’ll go check them out and see what else is new.

ABC Previews New Fall Series: Last Resort
Yesterday, ABC rolled out its new fall season of shows to whet the appetite of fans and open the pocket books of advertisers. Rather than run down the litany of shows, I want to highlight a few of the ones I think will be big hits. Up first is ‘Last Resort’. This one seemed a big unlikely to work as a series to me, but then I watched this sizzle reel and now I’m really anticipating the show.
Here’s the set up: 500 feet beneath the ocean’s surface, the U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado receive their orders. Over a radio channel, designed only to be used if their homeland has been wiped out, they’re told to fire nuclear weapons at Pakistan.
video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player
Last Resort has some star power too. Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) demands confirmation of the orders only to be unceremoniously relieved of duty by the White House. XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) finds himself suddenly in charge of the submarine and facing the same difficult decision. When he also refuses to fire without confirmation of the orders, the Colorado is targeted, fired upon, and hit. The submarine and its crew find themselves crippled on the ocean floor, declared rogue enemies of their own country. Now, with nowhere left to turn, Chaplin and Kendal take the sub on the run and bring the men and women of the Colorado to an exotic island. Here they will find refuge, romance and a chance at a new life, even as they try to clear their names and get home.
“Last Resort” stars Andre Braugher (“Men of a Certain Age”) as Captain Marcus Chaplin, Scott Speedman (“The Vow”) as XO Sam Kendal, Daisy Betts (“Sea Patrol”) as Lieutenant Grace Shepard, Dichen Lachman (“Being Human”) as Tani Tumrenjack, Daniel Lissing (“Crownies”) as SEAL Officer James King, Sahr Ngaujah (“House of Payne”) as Mayor Julian Serrat, Camille de Pazzis as Sophie Gerard, Autumn Reeser (“Hawaii Five-O,” “No Ordinary Family”) as Kylie Sinclair, Jessy Schram (“Falling Skies,” “Once Upon a Time”) as Christine Kendal.
Recurring guest star is Robert Patrick (“The Gangster Squad”) as Master Chief Joseph Prosser.
“Last Resort” was written by Shawn Ryan (“The Shield,” “The Unit,” “The Chicago Code”) and Karl Gajdusek, who are also executive producers along with Martin Campbell and Marney Hochman Nash. The pilot for “Last Resort” was directed by Martin Campbell. “Last Resort” is produced by Middkid Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Final Answer. Dancing With the Stars, Week 9 Results Show
The results show began with an encore performance of William and Cheryl’s perfect scoring samba. Next, we saw that Katherine’s back was feeling much better as she jumped for joy upon hearing that she and Mark, this week’s low scorers, made it to the finals. The Macy’s Stars of Dance performance was the design-a-dance featuring a samba danced by Tristan and Chelsie.
After a performance by Alanis Morissette, Maria and Derek, this week’s leaders, learned they were in jeopardy. WHAT THE WHAT? “Rock of Ages” stars Julianne Hough, Mary J. Blige, and Diego Boneta rocked the ballroom with a medley of songs, and Carrie Underwood performed one of her new songs.
Tom revealed that William and Cheryl were safe, which left Donald and Peta in jeopardy. The ballroom erupted in boos when it was announced that Maria and Derek were leaving the competition. Perhaps less people voted for them since they seemed like a sure thing for the finals? Yikes. I thought they were going to win the whole thing!
Next week we’ll see the last three couples freestyle their hearts out as the quest for the mirrorball trophy comes to a close. Yay freestyle! See you back here!

Olympic Competitor David Payne at ESPN Wide World Of Sports in a Lighter Moment
Turkey Legs. Or are they?
Walt Disney World is known for attracting tourists from around the world to visit it’s beautiful parks and resorts, but in the sports world it’s also known as a world class training facility. Competitors like Olympic Medalist David Payne stop by to train and try to win another medal at this year’s London Summer Olympics.
Of course, this being Disney World it’s hard not to engage in a little bit of good natured fun too. Disney’s Gary Buchanan is a fan of Payne’s and challenged him to a race with a Disney character… but not, as it turns out, one of the fab five, instead Buchanan dressed up in his Turkey Leg Halloween costume, seen last the the Trick or Tweet event in the Magic Kingdom, and attempted to run in that.
Here are the hilarious results.
For some reason I’m really hungry now.

Three Years Later: A Look at Disney’s Acquisition of Marvel
Nearly three years ago, Disney fans and comic book geeks alike did double takes as they looked at the latest news: Disney bought Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. While this was less than Disney spent for PIXAR, there were no previous projects between Disney and Marvel, other than Disney having acquired Stan Lee’s POW Entertainment in 2008. After the success of Marvel’s The Avengers (distributed by Walt Disney Pictures), let’s take a look at who owns the characters and a glimpse at the future:
This purchase did come with a lot of tangled red tape, as the rights to many of the most popular Marvel Characters were spread out across the film distribution universe (not to mention theme-park rights). Currently, 20th Century FOX owns rights to the X-Men universe, Daredevil, Elektra, and Fantastic Four; Sony has hold of Ghost Rider and Spider-Man; and New Line Cinema’s hold on the Blade property and Lionsgate’s rights to The Punisher have reverted back to Marvel.
Unfortunately, it’s going to be difficult to get the rights to any in-park Avengers rides, walk-arounds, etc, at Walt Disney World as Universal and Marvel have signed a long-lasting contract for Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, and Captain America at their Universal Orlando park. However, Universal did allow their contract for Universal Hollywood to lapse, so an attraction or meet-and-greet characters in Disneyland Resort, most likely Disney California Adventure (or perhaps that empty strawberry field down Harbor Blvd) is possible.
Should Disney ever buy-out Marvel’s contract with Universal Orlando, I do have a few ideas for the use of Marvel’s hottest property at the moment: 1) Use the empty Wonders of Life Pavilion in EPCOT’s Future World as a new home to the Stark Expo (could also be housed in Innoventions) 2) A new Marvel-themed area in DHS, with one E-ticket and maybe a stage show or side show (a-la Jedi Training Academy). Those Streets of New York are awfully empty these days… 3) I do not foresee an attraction being added to the Magic Kingdom, because, well, it just wouldn’t fit, unless WDI decides to future-ize Tomorrow Land 4) With the addition of Pandora on hold at the Animal Kingdom, Marvel has a few animal-like heroes that could fit the area.
So, three years later, the purchase of Marvel is just beginning to pay off for Disney. The future is bright for the company, especially as rights for the tent-pole characters come back. In the next two years have The Amazing Spider-Man (Columbia Pictures July 3, 2012), Iron Man 3 (Spring 2013), The Wolverine (20th Century FOX: Summer 2013), Thor 2 (Fall 2013), Captain America 2 (Spring 2014) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Columbia Pictures 2014).
Do you think Disney should buy out Universal soon? Where would you place Marvel Characters in the parks? Which characters should have their own movie?

Car Masters Weekend Returns for 2nd Year at Downtown Disney, June 2-3
I’m of the opinion that Downtown Disney is under-utilized as an event space. The Festival of the Masters has a long running success and last year they tried adding a car show. That must have been a success too, because it’s back again this year, even without a freshly released ‘Cars’ movie from Pixar to tie it to (not to say they aren’t trying).
Car Masters Weekend is held at Downtown Disney June 2-3, 2012. It celebrates everything “Cars,” in a free, two-day event with a car show presented by Hess Express, plus meet and greets with Lightning McQueen, Mater and Finn McMissile.
In a race for ‘Best in Show,’ car enthusiasts from the local Muscle Car Network of Central Florida will display more than 100 classic, muscle and exotic cars for families and judges to view. Guests are invited to vote for their favorite car to win the People’s Choice and Kid’s Choice awards.
Revving up the fun, legendary automotive designer Chip Foose will be making special appearances as one of the car show’s guest judges. Foose, who contributed to the design of Ramone in the Disney•Pixar ”Cars” film, also will be on-hand for a signing of his Cars-inspired images, including Doc Hudson, Lightning McQueen, Flo, Ramone and Mater.
New Car Masters elements this year include vehicles from the new Exotic Driving Experience at Walt DisneyWorld Speedway; a LEGO interactive zone and “Cars”-themed topiaries. Jay Ward, Disney•Pixar “Cars” filmmaker, also will make an appearance. In addition, fans can purchase tickets for an all-day “Cars” and ”Cars 2″ movie marathon at AMC Downtown Disney 24.
Returning events will include a chance for guests to put the pedal to the metal with Ridemakerz model cars; Disney face painters & tattoo artists; a DJ and several local food trucks. General Motors also will have their latest Chevrolet models on display, including the Corvette Grand Sport, Camaro Convertible and the Volt.
Do yourself a favor and head down for some fun to Downtown Disney West Side from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. For more information, visit disneyworld.com/downtowndisney.

How to Make the Matterhorn Disappear and Reappear the Disney Way
As Disneyland prepares to re-open the Matterhorn with new cars, new ‘snow’, and refurbished track on June 15th, hopefully all the hard work will pay off with thousands of smiles as a new generation of families get to experience the world famous attraction. But before they could begin the hard work of the upgrades, Disney had to erect a complex system of scaffolding to protect workers and guests down below.
Disney seldom lets a chance to document a moment like this pass by and they’ve made this terrific time-lapse video of the mountain disappearing behind a shroud and then reappearing again later when the work was done.
Originally 147 foot high (1/100th scale of the real mountain), the Matterhorn now only measures 144 feet after sinking slightly when the water from the Submarine Lagoon was emptied. (Just kidding!) It does, however, have a basketball half-court in the break room half-way up the mountain.
What other fun facts about the Matterhorn do you know?

Too Close to Call. Dancing With the Stars, Week 9 Recap
Four incredibly talented couples. Two dances each. Welcome to the semi-finals.
Maria and Derek rocketed to the top of a very close leader board this week. Their sleek Argentine tango earned them a perfect 30 from the judges, who had nothing but praise for the routine. After learning more about Maria’s hardworking Greek family, we saw the couple’s second dance, the jive. Bruno thought it was brilliant, Carrie Ann called Maria a winner, and Len liked it, even though it was non-traditional. Scores of 10, 9, 10 gave their jive a 29 and totaled 59 out of 60 for the night.
William and Cheryl’s first dance was a stormy tango. Len wanted a tighter hold and crisper movements, but Bruno called it “ace.” The judges gave them a score of 28 (9, 9, 10). We heard the struggles that William endured during his early life in Cuba and immigration to the United States, and then we were treated to the pair’s exotic samba. Carrie Ann had to take a drink of water before raving about William’s thrusting bounces. A perfect 30 gave them a total score of 58 out of 60 for the evening.
An emotional waltz from Donald and Peta pleased the judges, who awarded them a 28 (9, 9, 10). Donald shared some stories about his rough childhood before delivering a smooth samba with Peta. Len was left feeling that the routine was a little too careful, but Bruno and Carrie Ann loved it. A score of 29 (10, 9, 10) gave the couple a total of 57 out of 60 for the semi-finals.
Katherine and Mark’s quickstep was inspired by the roaring twenties. Bruno thought it was incredible, Carrie Ann said it was Katherine’s best dance ever, and Len, of course, saw an error. Scores of 10, 9, 10 gave them a 29 for their first dance. We saw Katherine as an adorable little girl that was always ready for a performance. A little girl no more, she bared her belly for her salsa with Mark. Their fantastic dance came to a disappointing end when Katherine suffered an injury (apparently a back spasm) during one of her last moves. The judges were kind…Carrie Ann said she let loose and Len called her Katherine the Great. Triple 9s brought their total for the night to 56 out of 60, leaving them in last place.
This has been the most competitive season ever. Who will dance in the finals next Monday? We’ll find out tonight!
