Monorail Collision - One Cast Member Sadly Dead
Reports are coming in about the monorail collision overnight at the Epcot Station. The incident happened around 2:00 AM when it apears that a Pink monorail train collided with a purple monorail train at the station, killing its driver. Our condolences go out to the family of this Cast Member, his friends and the Disney Cast for their loss.
Statement from Disney:
"Today, we mourn the loss of our fellow cast member. Our hearts go out to his family and those who have lost a friend and coworker. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our top priority. The monorail is out of service and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to determine what happened and the appropriate next steps."
- Mike Griffin, vice president of public affairs at Walt Disney World
The deceased Cast Member has been named by many online sources as Austin Wuennenberg, aged 21. Reedy Creek firefighters spent 20 minutes digging through the wreckage before pronouncing Wuennenberg dead on the scene.
The driver of the other train and six guests were onboard the trains at the time of the crash they were taken to Florida Hospital Celebration as a precaution, thankfully all were released without serious injury.
There was no immediate word on what caused the wreck which marks the first fatal accident in the Walt Disney World Monorail System’s nearly 38 years of operation.
The monorail has been suspended today pending an investigation; no word on when it will reopen.
The Orlando Sentinel has a fuller version of the ongoing story. The Disney Blog have a fuller and probably better informed report.
Speaking, I think for all of the community, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and fellow Cast Members of the deceased.

I must say I was in shock when I first heard about this story. I am just thanking God that there was no one else in the front with the Monorail pilot at the time of the accident. It is also quite scary to think of that happening because I myself have sat up front on many occassions. My prayers go out to the family and friends of the lost cast member.
